  11.        The Media Recorder Tool (invoked from the command line as
  12.        _m_e_d_i_a_r_e_c_o_r_d_e_r) is a graphical tool that allows you to record
  13.        audio files, movie files or still images from the camera or
  14.        other video source, microphone and workstation screen.
  15.  
  16.        Currently, the video capture modes of Media Recorder work on
  17.        the following hardware:

  19.           +o The O2 workstation
  20.  
  21.           +o The Octane workstation with Octane Video, Octane
  22.             Compression, or Octane Personal Video option boards

  24.           +o the Indy workstation, including the Indy Video and
  25.             Cosmo Compress option boards

  27.           +o the Indigo2 workstation with the Galileo, Indigo2
  28.             Video, Indigo2 Video for IMPACT, or Cosmo Compress

  37.        18.1  _C_h_a_n_g_e_s__a_n_d__A_d_d_i_t_i_o_n_s

  40.        This section lists changes and additions to Media Recorder
  41.        since the IRIX 6.2 release.

  43.           +o The Media Recorder Tool replaces the old Capture Tool,
  44.             found on IRIX 5.x and 6.2.  Media Recorder contains
  45.             many new features, user interface improvements,
  46.             improved reliability and performance compared to the
  47.             Capture Tool.

  49.             The command name _c_a_p_t_u_r_e and its command line syntax
  50.             have been retained for backwards compatibility, but
  51.             their use is strongly deprecated. Please refer to the
  52.             manual page for _m_e_d_i_a_r_e_c_o_r_d_e_r(_1) and update your
  53.             scripts accordingly.  Note that _m_e_d_i_a_r_e_c_o_r_d_e_r(_1) offers
  54.             new features not supported by _c_a_p_t_u_r_e, which may be
  55.             accessed only through the new command line syntax.

  81.             supported on all systems.  On SGI systems with optional
  82.             or built-in video capability, such as the O2
  83.             workstation, the Indy/Indigo2 with the Cosmo Compress
  84.             option, or the Octane with Octane Personal Video, you
  85.             can record QuickTime movies with motion JPEG
  86.             compression from the workstation screen.

  88.           +o Media Recorder provides greatly improved video
  89.             recording performance and audio-video synchronization
  90.             as compared to the Capture Tool.

  92.           +o Media Recorder is now capable of using multiple disk
  93.             volumes at once to achieve higher rate captures, given

  98.             scheduling priorities to achieve better video capture.

  102.             Desktop(TM).  Newly recorded media files appear as
  103.             icons right inside the Media Recorder display.  You can
  104.             rename them or drag them to other applications.  You
  105.             can also choose the directory in which to record files
  106.             by dragging a desktop folder into the icon pocket in
  107.             the Media Recorder display.

  109.           +o Media Recorder now allows you to choose audio and video
  110.             jacks directly from within the application.  The Audio
  111.             and Video control panels can still be used to set
  112.             signal timing (NTSC vs. PAL) and to adjust audio input
  113.             levels.

  115.           +o There is a new user interface for selecting regions of
  116.             the screen, which is improved over that provided by the
  117.             Capture Tool.

  119.           +o You can now set a time delay before recording starts,
  120.             allowing you to grab screenshots of menus and other
  121.             mouse-sensitive tasks.

  145.             applications, include Media Maker and Sound Track.

  147.           +o The still image feature now supports several popular
  148.             formats, including JPEG, GIF and TIFF.  You can also
  149.             view captured images in place, rather than in a

  154.             eight-channel recording.

  164.        This section lists problems in Media Recorder which have
  165.        been fixed since the IRIX 6.4 release.

  167.           +o The command line options have been enhanced. You can
  168.             now specify compression, color packing, and interlacing
  169.             settings for movie files, specify screen recording
  170.             options, and direct the tool to record without human
  171.             intervention. For more details, see the _m_e_d_i_a_r_e_c_o_r_d_e_r
  172.             manual page.

  174.           +o There have been several minor user interface
  175.             improvements. The Clip Bin has been reworked to look
  176.             and behave more like other desktop media applications
  177.             such as _m_o_v_i_e_m_a_k_e_r.  You can now freely adjust the size
  178.             of the Clip Bin relative to the viewing area.  More
  179.             prompts have been added in areas to help those
  180.             unfamiliar with the tool, and Media Recorder now
  181.             visually highlights the chosen recording mode (movie,
  182.             image or audio) onscreen.

  185.             editors, players, conversion and info displays on media

  213.             you to select movie parameters, such as size, color
  214.             space, interlacing, and compression settings, without
  215.             regard for the capabilities of your system's underlying
  216.             video hardware.  Media Recorder will take advantage of
  217.             hardware capabilities, such as color space conversion
  218.             and Motion JPEG compression, and perform software
  219.             format conversion only when necessary.

  221.           +o If recording aborts because audio or video was dropped,
  222.             you will still get a useful media file. Previous
  223.             versions of the tool would discard the file if audio or
  224.             video was dropped while recording.

  226.           +o Audio recording and waveform display now uses less CPU
  227.             time than earlier versions of the tool.

  229.           +o The Movie Settings dialog now accurately displays the
  230.             dimensions for the final movie file, based upon the
  231.             current video signal being recorded.

  255.             best to avoid running more than one application that

  272.             Video Input (_v_i_d_e_o_i_n from the command line) at the same
  273.             time as running _m_e_d_i_a_r_e_c_o_r_d_e_r.  Nor should you attempt
  274.             to run two instances of _m_e_d_i_a_r_e_c_o_r_d_e_r both capturing
  275.             video at once.
  276.  
  277.           +o When switching to quarter sized video, it is possible
  278.             to make the window so small that the buttons overlap
  279.             one another.  To work around this problem, make the
  280.             window larger.
  281.  
  282.           +o It can take up to a second for video to start or stop
  283.             recording after you press the Record button.
  284.  
  285.           +o If you completely fill the disk while recording a
  286.             movie, you often cannot get a usable movie file.  This
  287.             is because there is insufficient temporary disk space
  288.             available to create the final movie file. To work
  289.             around this problem, set up your scratch disks on a
  290.             different drive or filesystem than the one which will
  291.             contain the final movie file.  Alternately, you can
  292.             avoid the practice of recording video right up until
  293.             the moment the disk is full.

  295.           +o If you are creating JPEG compressed movies on O2, and
  296.             you customize the capture "Task Settings" from the
  297.             "Tasks -> Show Task Settings" menu, then you must take
  298.             care to ensure that the "Advanced Options ->
  299.             Interlacing" pop-up menu is set to "Two Fields".
  300.             Otherwise, mediarecorder may crash or hang when it
  301.             performs its "post-processing" operation.  A movie that
  302.             is captured with "Two Field" interlacing may be
  303.             converted to non-intlaced "One Frame" format by using
  304.             moviemaker or dmconvert.
